But she assured me that a city official would have time for us, and rang an extension. I spoke with the friendly receptionist who had no clue who Stanley was. Governing a city of nearly 40,000 is no laughing matter, but Stanley insisted we check out the Coppell Town Hall. Stanley scored big as he took home a scorecard, pencil and a magnetic Cowboys ball marker. One thing led to another, and suddenly we were bragging about the two great Midwestern states from which we hail: Iowa and Ohio. In fact, he posed Stanley himself, tucking him into a slot in the cart so my outstretched arm wouldn’t appear in the photo. I explained Stanley’s objectives, and the distinguished gentleman proudly showed off his best ride, the Roger Staubach cart.
Outside we approached a golf starter as he prepped the carts. First Stanley checked out a glass case with some Cowboys’ relics: Super Bowl trophies and championship rings.
Golf is serious business here, with greens fees a whopping $185. I drove Flat Stanley to the Cowboys Golf Club. Soon enough I involved strangers in my adventures.
